Five Countries

by Neil Yates

supported by
Deidre House

Deidre House Trumpeter Neil Yates, accompanied by guitar and light percussion, plays a sort of world and folk tinged jazz on this album. I never thought I'd hear bodhran (a traditional Irish drum) used in a jazz context. This trio has a chemistry that is subtle yet powerful. Favorite track: Slipreel.

john greenwood I get the sensation or the thought of listening to a minstrel tell a story when I listen to this album. It works, all the songs have this quality about them. There is an interesting energy in the music. Well played Neil. Favorite track: Snowdonia/Sail The Sky.
Philip Graham

Philip Graham A beautifully precise jazz trio that creates elegant dreamy music. Each composition is a gem. Neil Yates plays the trumpet as well as anyone I've ever heard, with a fluid tone that's all his own. This is an album that I keep returning to, as its pleasures seem nearly inexhaustible. Favorite track: Rainy Harbour.
Al Swainger

Al Swainger Sonically enchanting throughout, this album is just beautiful. Hypnotic and emotive, all three players sound like they have been making this music all their lives. Mellow but with great variety it finds it's way back on to my playlist regularly. Favorite track: Slipreel.
Clayton Giles

ABOUT:
The music of Five Countries migrates – like traditional musicians taking their music from Ireland and Scotland to America or from Romania and Hungary to Spain. It takes the sounds of their five countries to places and cultures familiar and less so. This is music of quality borne of passion by three musicians each with their own personally crafted and uniquely honed sound.

CREDITS:
All compositions by Neil Yates

PRESS:
“A discreet virtuoso, Yates adapts skipping folk-fiddle melodies to trumpet, flugelhorn and tenor horn, and his engaging themes – full of light, fluttering figures – are compatibly supported by Bende’s bell-like chording and Byrne’s galloping low-register sounds on the bodhran drum and Latin-American cajon”.
